A good day to you,

some of our discussions at Brights Germany resultet in questions we
would like to know your opinion on:

1. How can we exercise social and political influence without vaguely positioning ourselves politically?

2. It seems to us that a consequent naturalist worldview almost necessarily leads to humanist ethics. Could this be true?

3. In the principles it says: "What is sought is social acceptance and civic equality."
But how could this be possible? For example: If we take position for the seperation of church and state and the people who do not agree
were in the majority, wouldn't their position count more in the end? Wouldn't we have to accept - following that logic - that church and
state were not seperated because our position is ONLY equal to the other one? Personally I think that the positions in this case are
not equal, no matter how many people represent them. Church and state have to be seperated or we can not live together in peace. Did I
misunderstand something?

4. You wrote: "Persons are not excluded from the Brights by politics or other characteristics."
That, again, sounds very nice and democratic. The problem: It also sounds as if a naturalist worldview would not have anything to do with a political
position. I agree with you that it is not linked with a specifical political worldview but there are political views we just could not accept as
based on a naturalist worldview, could we? For example, if someone comes up who thinks that his race is superior to others - how is he supposed to
argue for such a view and how could it be compatible with a naturalist worldview? I really don't think this would work out. There is a great
tolerance for all sorts of political positions, but: There also are - necessarily - borders, or not?

5. Dr. Mynga Futrell is a member of the "Giordano Bruno Stiftung". Brights Germany also works together with them. But how can we? The
Giordano Bruno Stiftung does position itself much more clearly than the Brights do in general. Do we not identify ourselves with their
goals as a movement if we work together with them on specific occasions? And if we would not do so, we would miss a great chance of taking
action. In fact I doubt that without the help of others we could take any action at all. At least here in Germany.

6. The Brights were - as it seems to me - basically found to introduce the new term "bright". What in my opinion is much more important is our
position as a naturalist movement. I even do not think that it is so relevant if one likes the term "bright" or not, there just is no other, as
far as I know, naturalist movement. What is more important in your opinion?

Some of these questions are really hard. Pershaps you will find the time to answer them anyway.
That would make us so happy. :D

Bright regards
Andreas Mueller

Feb 2007, 23:27

Andreas

Thanks for the email and your interest and energy. You asked some giant(!)
and really good questions.

Through the remainder of February we are pretty well inundated with work,
and so we will have to respond item by item as time becomes available.

Below we get started...

===============
Question 1. How can we exercise social and political influence without
vaguely positioning ourselves politically?

Answer 1: The movement began as an endeavor to get more people who have a
naturalistic outlook to be expressive of it in their varied ways, not in any
one way. Collaborations are possible, with specific individuals on specific
goals.

A very important concept is that The Brights' Net is a constituency. It is
not a typical organization with a president, board of directors, etc. that
make the decisions for, or takes positions on behalf of, the members. The
Brights is a true constituency, and an Internet-based entity, so the
directors (or others) do not speak for "the Brights" since each Bright
maintains his/her independent ideas/beliefs. When The Brights' Network
issues a general statement, it is based on polling or petition and worded
like this: "On the topic of "creationism" 5,678 Brights have signed the
following statement: "Xxxxx" etc." The Co-Directors serve as educators ABOUT
the movement, helping others to understand the nature of the organization
and its aims, principles, data about local and regional clusters, and so on.
Because this movement is different, a unique idea, in fact, it requires of
Brights that they educate others to the unique nature of the movement.

It would be impossible in the United States for the U.S. Brights to take a
political position (either legally or practically). Legally we are a U.S.
501c3 non-profit educational organization and, as such, we may not exercise
significant political involvement. Practically speaking, the U.S. Brights
(and this is undoubtedly so in other nations as well) have Brights in every
political party (in U.S. Democrats, Republicans, Greens, Independents, Peace
and Freedom, Unionists, etc.). To declare a political affiliation would be
the death of The Brights' Network.

Internationally, our experience has been that most any assertion from
"Brights Central" will prompt a smattering of disagreement from
constituents. On some matters, closely tied to a naturalistic outlook and to
the broad civic aims of equal societal acceptance and participation, one can
predict that a predominance of Brights will be in agreement on a matter that
relates directly to the aims and principles, and in these cases, we bring
"Brighten Opportunities" to the forefront of constituent consideration.
Still, it is individual Brights, or specific collaborations of particular
individuals, who take any action.

End of Question 1
==========================

5. Dr. Mynga Futrell is a member of the "Giordano Bruno Stiftung".

Actually, she was invited as a member of the "advisory council" which, in
the United States, is quite different from being a member of the
organization. The invitation was extended before there was a Brights
movement. It was based on her participation in the Atheist Alliance
International.
End of comment.

Meine Antwort

Beitragvon Andreas Müller » So 18. Feb 2007, 00:15

A good day to you,

and thank you very much for your answers.

Just some short comments:

1. Please be aware that these questions are a result of discussions we had in
the German Brights Forum. They do not necessarily reflect my personal positions.
But I will try to include them in our discussion.

2.
> so the directors (or others) do not speak for "the Brights"

Except when it is about general questions or positions that Brights necessarily
share, like the naturalistic worldview. For example any Bright could say:
"We (speaking for all Brights) do not believe in the supernatural."
Am I right? :)

Well, I hope so, because some of us happened to have done that publicly. For example
I wrote an answer to a critic of the movement by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung and a letter
to the editor to the "taz" newspaper. Not in the name of the Brights Net but - could be
understood like that - in the name
of "Brighs Germany" (although I only wrote: "Andreas Müller. From Brights Germany").
I strictly kept to the rules and principles within my public comments. Except that this
whole comment idea didn't seem to fit the principles, if I got you right, and I would be
very sorry in this case.

Problem is: If I - and others - would not have done that, I doubt that there would be many Brights
in Germany. So how could we solve this?

>it requires of Brights that they educate others to the unique nature of the movement.

There you got it. ;)

> It would be impossible in the United States for the U.S. Brights to take
> a political position (either legally or practically).

There we seem to have a little misunderstandig, due to my awfully unclear
question. What I meant was not that we go out and say "We're Brighs. We love
communism" or something like that. My hairs fall out when I only read that. The
question was strictly restricted to the goal of promoting equality for naturalists,
which is a political position after all and part of the principles.

> To declare a political affiliation would be the death of The Brights' Network.

I really didn't mean that. What a horrible idea. :o

> Still, it is individual Brights, or specific collaborations of particular
> individuals, who take any action.

Wouldn't this basically mean that we may not take any action in the name of
"Brights Germany"? Perhaps we could make clear the difference between Brights
Net and Brights Germany? Or we have to change our structure/name. Well, until now
nothing bad happened. We are just planning our first action in collaboration with
the GBS... Even their speaker, the philosopher Dr. Michael Schmidt-Salomon, Germany's most
prominent atheist and also a bright, obviously thinks that "Brights Germany" could work together with
the GBS for specific actions. :o

> Actually, she was invited as a member of the "advisory council" which, in
> the United States, is quite different from being a member of the
> organization.

Yes, I'm sorry. I didn't express this clear enough. It's due to my imperfect
English. The GBS is a "Stiftung", a "foundation", not a member organisation in the classic
sense.

> The invitation was extended before there was a Brights
> movement. It was based on her participation in the Atheist Alliance
> International.

It certainly was no mistake. Don't get me wrong. The GBS is great.

> Answer: Let's wait a bit on that decision. As we work our way through
> your
> thoughtful questions, we will become better acquainted with each others'
> positions. Then we can both revisit the idea.

A wise decision.

Still, we are sometimes in a problematic position. The media are a bit... slow on some questions.
Probably it's due to the structure of our society. We got lobbys/other organisations. They got one view each.

Altough I never really said I would in any way represent the whole "Brights Germany" it somehow tends to look like that.
At least I sticked strictly to the principles within public comments.

Still, Brights Germany momentarily works a bit different than Brights Net.
For example we have a blog where news that could be of
interest for Brights are made available. Or - and that may not be in your interest -
we agree on common actions of "Brighs Germany" (not "Brights Net") in our public forum. That's due to
problems with the public representation of the movement here (remember the "slow"). But I very well see
that we should change that. Perhaps we should give ourselves another name or something
like that. We had quite some problems to defend the "arrogant" term "Bright" anyway. Personally I think
this would be a pity. I like the Brights. Always defended it. Brakes my heart. :'(

But it doesn't seem to fit your idea of the movement.

Admittedly everyone here got problems with the narrower definitions of what a
Bright is and what our goals are. In the details it really gets a bit complicated.
I can only hope we haven't done any damage so far.

Bright regards (I love that one),
Andreas

Immer locker bleiben! ;-)

The Brights do hold an opinion!! Und das ist der wohltuende, fruchtbare Unterschied.

Sehr gut!
